Are You a "Real Man" If You Wear a Male Romper?

Are You a "Real Man" If You Wear a Male Romper?

So let's just hop right into it…male rompers. This past week social media platforms have been filled with the topic of male rompers, and some of today’s most popular men like Cam Newton were seen rocking male rompers. This is not the first time we have seen men wearing women’s clothing. Over the past few years, men such as Young Thug and Lil Uzi have worn dresses and other types of women’s clothing. In addition, Dwayne Wade and Russell Westbrook have been known to push the envelope by wearing capris and flowy tops as they enter their home team arenas before a game. So, this leads me to my next question of is this new trend acceptable? Can men rock women’s fashion and still be considered a “man”?

Ashley N. Hill, Principal Owner and Chief Stylist of A. Hill Styling Co., believes it is okay for men to include feminine styles in their wardrobe, but a line has to be drawn somewhere.

“ There are certain styles and looks that are purposed for a man and ultimately give them that "manly" look and feel. It's a huge reason that I chose to style men...it's something about dressing a man "like a man" even if there are some softer touches added (fun colors, floral ties, men's accessories etc.) ...”, said Hill.

I want to play devil’s advocate for a second because we all know homophobia is a real topic in the black community. By rejecting the male romper are we sending a message that all men who wear feminine clothing are gay? Should a man be subjected to such titles because of the way he dresses?

Jayden Smith, son of Will and Jada Smith has been seen everywhere wearing dresses and Wiz Khalifa has been known to wear nail polish.  These men are clearly not gay as they have had several high-profile relationships with women.

In my opinion, I like a manly man who wears manly clothes. I want a man who is clearly straight and does not go too far with his wardrobe. I am not knocking a man who desires to wear those types of clothing, but he just can’t be my man. I do not think a man is gay because he wears feminine clothing, but it takes a certain type of women to date him, I am just not that woman.

A.Hill Styling Co. seems to agree as well and advises her clients to stay far away from the male romper.

“In my humble opinion, rompers are for women, just like ties are for men period. As Solange says..."Some ish is for us!" I have a good feeling the male romper trend will be very short lived. Some things just don't work in fashion and male rompers are definitely on the list,” said Hill.
