Black Hollywood, Oscars 2017: The Importance of Supporting Black Films
Black History Month has ended on a great note with all the black excellence at this year's Oscars. Last year we were yelling "Oscars So White", but this year it appears to be the opposite. I guess our voice was finally heard along with a bit of boycotting last year's show. With the accomplishments of movies like "Hidden Figures, "Moonlight" and "Fences", along with victories from the likes of Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali, the black star power made a mark this year.
At a time like this, we have to remember the importance of supporting black films that tell the black story. I know a lot you all feel some of these stories have been told before whether it's about slavery or some type of injustice against blacks, but these are still our stories and they must be told. We have to remember just because we know these stories does not mean others have heard or seen them. We are still living in a very racially divided world and sometimes the only way for others to know our struggle and where we come from is through the TV. Also, if we do not go to the box office and support our own films we are never going to make our way into more mainstream movies such as "X-Men" and "Captain America" which usually only includes one token person of color. We have to continue to support black films so those actors can get the notoriety they deserve so one day they can make it into huge blockbusters like Jamie Foxx and Halle Berry.
