I met a 40 year old man who has a roommate…..
A few weeks ago, I met two young black successful men who seem to be pretty cool. They both were both veterans, owned properties and had successful careers. Throughout the night, we engaged in a series of conversations about life, and at the end of the night, I concluded these were two cool brothers.
A few days later I was informed by a friend that these two gentlemen were roommates!! I was shocked and could not believe that at 34 and 39 these two men who clearly could afford to live on their own were sharing space.
After learning this information this raised a lot of eyebrows and questions in my head. How old is too old to have a roommate? At what age should you be fully living on your own? Is it different for a man?
To be honest my first thought was to question their sexuality. Were they gay and the roommate thing was just a cover up? But then I thought to myself maybe they aren’t gay…maybe they are just immature. Any time you must constantly have a person around who is not your spouse it just shows you can’t stand on your own two feet.
We live in Atlanta where rent is relatively affordable for a single person. I know in places like L.A., D.C. San Francisco, and New York most adults either have roommates or live with their parents until they get married no matter their age since the rent is just way too high for the average person to be able to afford on their own. As I stated before these men were older and seem to have multiple streams of income and I could not see any reason why at their age they would need to share an apartment.
I have only had roommates in college and have never really had a desire to live with anyone. Living with family was difficult for me as I have always wanted my own space and alone time. Outside of living in an area where the cost of living is high, there are some exceptions to having a roommate. If you are not in a financial place where you can afford your own place or you just simply need help getting on your feet than yes a roommate may be necessary, but only temporarily.
In my opinion, by the age of 30, you should not have a roommate if you can afford it. Roommates are for people who are in their 20s. When a woman visits, she wants privacy. Women don’t want to wake up to another person in the house.
Grow up fellas!!!!!!!
