“The Weekend” is it really a side chick song?
“The Weekend”, SZA’s smash off her debut album “CTRL” is one of 2017’s most popular songs, but SZA recently received a lot of flack for performing this song on “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) with the help of a gospel choir. Now, I live for SZA and I wasn’t mad at the gospel background vocals because I understand it is her art and I am not here to judge. Many thought it was inappropriate to sing a “side chick” song with a gospel choir, but I want to take an in-depth look and really analyze SZA’s lyrics and understand what she is really saying in the “The Weekend”.
She starts the song off by describing one of her most vulnerable and lonely moments, and a man who appears to have a girlfriend comes along and takes advantage of that.
“You say you gotta girl how you want me when you gotta girl, the feeling is reckless and knowing it's selfish knowing I’m desperate….”
I believe it takes two to tango for sure and when cheating is involved both parties are wrong especially if the other person is aware of the relationship. However, I do believe when a woman is lonely and in search of something it is easy for a man whether he is in a situation or not to come along and prey on our most vulnerable moments.
When you are that vulnerable it is easy to say, “I don’t care as long as you here by 10:30 no later than drop them draws you know what I mean”. At times you are so desperate you will settle for anything.
In most cases, desperation wares off and you eventually want more. Being the weekend “side chick” is only going to satisfy you for a second.
“I gotta say I’m in the mood for a little bit more of that, I’m saying what kind thing is two days I need me at least four of them more of them.”
Now I want to play devil's advocate for a second and evaluate the chorus. “My man is my man is your man heard it's her man too…..Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I just keep him satisfied on the weekend. You like 9-5 I’m the weekend. Make him loose is mind every weekend.”
When you really listen to the lyrics it sounds like this guy really isn’t anyone’s man, to begin with. I think SZA is saying I know this guy is involved with other women and I’m good with it. She just wants to be the lit chick on the weekend. So, with that being said is she really a side-chick if all the women know about each other? I personally have been accused of being a side chick and I wasn’t. I was involved with someone whose ex-was delusional and thought they were together. I know first-hand how that feels to have that title put on you.
The moral of the story is, I think we are so quick to judge a woman for the choices she makes when it comes to dating. Congratulations if you met your husband in college and hasn’t had much of a dating experience and has never really had to deal with heartbreak and peculiar dating situations, but most women have. I’m not waiving the side chick flag and trying to defend SZA’s lyrics, but what I do know is dating is hard. One thing I have learned over the past few months is, it is easy to say what you won’t do unless you are really put in that situation.
